One less zip tie

If you are a rider who buys your zip-ties by the canister, then you might as well click the back-button.

But if you are  interested in a more functional way to attach a battery-powered light to your bicycle, you may find this new invention from my friend Chico Gino intriguing. Gino’s Light Mount is simple, elegant, light-weight, and the definition of functional. Best of all, you won’t need another zip-tie to attach it.

Gino designed the device last summer and had a few protos machined by Paul Component Engineering. I spotted them on Gino’s Flickr page, and I immediately knew I had to have one for TRex. Gino shipped me a mount just in time for the Rocky Mountain 1200. I attached it to a 5mm hole in the Nitto front rack the day before I left for Kamloops. Since I wouldn’t have time for a shake-down cruise, Gino suggested that I squirt some Loctite into the works for insurance, but I didn’t have any on hand. What can I say … I’m a risk-taker.

The BC Randonneurs who inspected my rig at the check-in were more than a little curious.

Just what was this little protrusion intended to do, they asked?

It is the mount for my battery-powered back-up light, of course!

But where are the zip ties? Where is your Chronometro NOB?

Hey, don’t shoot me, I’m an American, doing my best to lower my carbon foot-print … one zip-tie at a time.

The mount stayed good and tight throughout 1200Ks of that Canadian brevet, and a thousand clicks since . One unexpected bonus is that I can use that battery-powered EL-500 as a primary when I am not running my SON generator front hub.

As we go to press, we are uncertain about Gino’s intention to put the mount into production. We’ll update you here as information becomes available from Zahnd Industries.
