If you are the kind of rider that cringes at the thought of getting wet when riding, here are is a way to stay dry and still get your miles in.
- Tune up your bike and get it ready to ride now.
- Create a cycling cache. Gather all of the cycling gear you will need for a ride in one place, including clothing, water bottle, and snacks.
- Then, stay alert – when you see a sun break (Pacific Northwest term for ‘the rain has stopped momentarily’), drop what you are doing, head for your gear cache to suit up and head out for a one hour, 15-mile ride.
- When you get back, wash the bike down, then fix any issues that you noticed (noisy chain, loose brake cable, etc.) immediately before you leave the garage.
- Take all of your cycling clothes into the laundry room and wash them immediately.
- Replace the gear pile so you’ll be ready to ride the next time you see the opportunity.
This approach works best for those that work at home, or on weekends for those that don’t. Of course, if you’re really serious about staying out of the rain, but want to ride during the day, use the same steps above to prepare a ride cache at the office and keep a bike at work.
